Work on a 5.4 km cross-sea bridge in the northern port city of Hai Phong is set to begin on February 15 in hopes that the bridge will facilitate the city’s industrial and tourism sectors.

The Tan Vu-Lach Huyen Bridge, with a width of 16 meters, will have four lanes and two safe strips. The bridge and a 10 km-long road leading to it will cost VND11.85 trillion (US$562 million) in total to build. Of the investment, VND10.05 trillion ($477 million) comes from Japanese ODA. The remainder is funded by the Vietnamese government.

Once completed by early 2017, Tan Vu-Lach Huyen will become Vietnam’s longest sea bridge. At present, the 2.5 km Thi Nai Bridge in the central province of Binh Dinh is the country’s longest bridge over the sea.

The Ministry of Transport said the Tan Vu-Lach Huyen Bridge project is a key part of Lach Huyen Port’s infrastructure. It will also connect developing areas east of Hai Phong with Lach Huyen Port, Dinh Vu Industrial Zone and the Hanoi – Hai Phong highway.
The bridge aims to facilitate transport, improve the industrial development in Hai Phong’s coastal areas and help boost tourism activities at Cat Ba Island.
